Pansy

There is a very specific kind of springtime struggle that no one warns you about. It happens quietly, usually in a garden center, while standing in front of a sea of pansies. Purple? Yellow? White with mysterious dark faces?

Pansies (Viola) are, without question, some of the brightest and most optimistic flowers of the season. After months of grey skies and reluctant sunshine, they arrive like tiny, colorful announcements: spring is not just coming — it’s already here. They are cheerful almost to the point of being smug, smiling up from their pots as if to say, “You survived winter.”

Choosing between their colors, however, is no easy task. Each one seems more convincing than the last. Soft pastels promise calm and elegance, while bold purples and sunny yellows demand attention. Mixing them sounds sensible — until you realize you want all of them.

For my balcony, pansies are the perfect companions. They don’t ask for much, yet they give generously in return. They catch the light in the morning, lift the mood in the afternoon, and quietly remind me every day that the season has turned. Even the simplest cup of coffee tastes better when shared with flowers that look this happy to be alive.

And of course, no spring purchase feels complete without setting some aside for the summer cottage. There’s something deeply satisfying about planting pansies there — a promise made in advance. They’ll be waiting, bright and familiar, when weekends grow longer and evenings move outdoors.

Every year, pansies mark the beginning. Of color. Of choice. Of lighter days and dirt under fingernails. They may be small, but their effect is immediate and joyful.

The spring has finally arrived. It has been a beautiful sunny week up here in the north and it feels good to have all this light and longer days after the winter.

The gardening stores are now opening their doors and since the day was made for spending time outdoors I took a long walk to one of them.

Since it should not be getting too cold during the nights anymore decided to by violets (viola). Even though we still are going to go below the freezing temperatures violets are able to make through them.

Just noticed that I have not posted anything to this blog for ages. Have been too busy working and in the end the gardening season up here is short, less than half a year long.

The violets (viola) are now in the stores.

It seems that this year I was not able to select my favorite color.

I just ended up buying all kinds of colors.

This season the most popular colors seem to be different shades of violet, purple or blue.

Black is a color you do not often see in a flower but it is gaining popularity.

I guess I still need to buy few more colors to brighten my day. Luckily violets are not that expensive.

The first pansy (viola) found its way to my balcony during the weekend.

I know it is a bit early for them because the nights might get too cold still but could not resist the temptation to have something blooming outside.

It will be interesting to see what kind of colors there will be available this year. I usually go for the light colors since they stand out better in the shade.

There are so many different color options for Violets (Viola) but I think that I now have the ones selected for this summer.

I have been going to different shops and finding out the options for this season.

Will have most of them in pots in the summer cottage, now that the isolation of the capital area is over and it seems that we are able to travel again.

Still more than a week to go before I will have a long weekend to spend over there. Simply cannot wait time to pass.

They have promised few days of warm weather just before the Eastern. We should go above 10 degrees Celsius which is warm up here in the north for this time of the year.

Pansies (viola) arrived and bought one for my balcony. I would love to have more but during the summer it simply gets to hot to grow them.

Now waiting for the other flower varieties to arrive hoping for new colors and shapes.

Spring is finally here and spring flowers have started to arrive to the shops.

Bought my first violet (viola) today. It was a bit difficult to choose the color and ended up buying a classic white one. The scent it has is simply staggering.

It sure has been a strange start for the new decade. For the first time we did not have a winter. It was like having an autumn that lasted for five months. Up here in the north it really gets dark and miserable without the snow. I have no idea what a winter like this will do for the garden and the plants.

Luckily the days are now getting longer and we can finally start to enjoy life again.

We have had few sunny days up here in the north. It is a bit early but could not resist buying few violas to the balcony even though we still have some snow on the ground.

This year winter came with plenty of snow and it has taken a while to melt. Good thing is that thick blanket of snow also acts as a cover and low temperatures do not harm the plants.

Less than month to go and the gardening season is here. Six long months we have waited but the reward is now nearly here.
