Violet

Violet (viola)

Spring is finally here and spring flowers have started to arrive to the shops.

Bought my first violet (viola) today. It was a bit difficult to choose the color and ended up buying a classic white one. The scent it has is simply staggering.

It sure has been a strange start for the new decade. For the first time we did not have a winter. It was like having an autumn that lasted for five months. Up here in the north it really gets dark and miserable without the snow. I have no idea what a winter like this will do for the garden and the plants.

Luckily the days are now getting longer and we can finally start to enjoy life again.

Pansy

Pansies are doing well in the balcony. Bought them already few weeks ago.

During some of the nights the temperature still goes below the freezing point but the pansies are used to the cold by now and do not mind. Sometimes they even survive the harsh winters up here.

Need to buy some more to the summer cottage. Just to have blooming flowers to brighten the early summer.

White Hyacinth

Hyacinth1

This is now becoming a habit – a spring hyacinth in a pot.

I used to have hyacinths only during the Christmas time. Here in the north it has always been considered a flower for the holiday season.

Now that they have become available also during the spring I always end up buying one.

I know that the strong scent of the flower is too much for most of the people but for some reason I enjoy it. It really fills the apartment with sweet smell of a spring.

Still nearly three more months to go before the first flowers outside start to bloom. I even planted few hyacinths to the summer cottage. Not quite sure if they are going to make it through the winter. Lower than minus 30 Celsius temperatures we had during January might have been too much for them.

PS. Keep hyacinth outside if it is not too cold. It lasts much longer if you do this.
